Now the FA have issued a ruling to ensure consistency of application across the whole country.

Essentially the age group that a player joins is determined by his or her date of birth – this also mirrors the school year.

The key date is 31st August and the chart opposite shows which age group applies for next season.

FA rules do permit a child to "Play Up" a year (i.e. an U9 can play for the U10’s) but under no circumstances can a child play for the age group below. As a club, Dereham Wanderers require that, for any player wishing to play up a year, a consensus of agreement is reached between both age group managers concerned, the child's parents and, of course the child themselves. We always try to consider what is best for the child, taking into account factors such as ability and physical development.

This season new rules have come into force for the Under 9`s and Under 11`s. Players MUST be 8 years old on 31st August to qualify to play Under 9`s and 10 years old on the 31st August to play Under 11`s.  The " 2 year age range" for these age groups has been withdrawn.

These are the ONLY 2 age groups that are affected. Players in all other age groups will have the " 2 year age range " i.e a player can play under 13`s if they are 11 . These rules ONLY apply to Boys/Mixed football. The girls league have a 2 year age gap at all age levels.
